Last minute Halloween promotion - the free t-shirts are back!

We still have a few Tokyo Rebel t-shirts left from opening day, so while supplies last, we'll give one away to anyone who spends more than $100 on Halloween, 10/31/09. No size guarantees - most of what we have left is L and XL, though we might be able to scrounge a medium or two if you're quick enough.

And no, you don't need to dress up for this one, and yes, we'll do it online this time too. Spend more than $100 before shipping, get a free t-shirt. It won't show up in your cart, but as long as the order's in our system by 11:59pm eastern time on the 31st (and we still have shirts!), you'll get your Tokyo Rebel t-shirt. If we run out, we'll post it here.

Don't say we never did anything for ya.

Announcing Part 4 of our Halloween Fair!

About time, eh? The Halloween Day festivities portion of our Halloween Fair has now been announced. Quoted from our original Halloween Fair post:

Visit our store dressed up in any Japan-themed outfit on Halloween Day - be it an Astro Boy costume or your best J-punk outfit - and we will give you an additional 10% off any store purchase! This is on top of any other promotions we're running right now, including the Algonquins sale. The only requirements are the outfit must be Japan-themed, and it must be a full-body outfit - not just a top or a pair of shoes.

In addition, we will be taking photos for the upcoming photo gallery on our web site - we're going to launch the section with a Halloween online fashion show. This is strictly voluntary, but if you'd like to show off your fashion sense on our web site, we will take your photo and post it! We will also be sending these photos to the producers of KERA magazine, although we can't guarantee they will publish them.

Note that both offers are open to everyone, in store and online. Online, you can send photos of yourself dressed up in a J-themed outfit by Monday November 2 to info@tokyorebel.com and we will send you a one-time 10% off coupon code and include you in our Halloween gallery - but there is one additional requirement. We ask that you send two photos - one regular full body shot and one fully body shot (in the same outfit) holding something (like a newspaper) that verifies the October 31, 2009 date. We need to restrict this to the current year.

We'll also have a selection of treats for our customers in our store - both candy and brownies and blondies from our friends at Hot Blondies Bakery! For that one day, we'll relax our "no eating" rule. Again, this one's "while supplies last", so you might want to come a little early. We're going to start this at 2PM on 10/31.

PUTUMAYO first shipment! And new Victorian maiden stock!

We may have been closed today, but we still received our first PUTUMAYO shipment, and a few new things from Victorian maiden!

First, PUTUMAYO. This was actually a pretty decent sized shipment, and it includes items in almost every category they offer - handbags, one-pieces, coats, accessories, socks, skirts, and more. This shipment included our first Lolita winter gear of the season:

We have the coat on the bottom in both the white and black check pattern and plain black. You can't see it in that photo above, but this coat has a cat-ear hood.

You may recognize this one-piece from PUTUMAYO's magazine ads - Misako Aoki wears this print in the G&L Bible:

Socks:

Some cute bags! These run the gamut of prices and styles, from inexpensive totes to higher-end handbags. You can see the one in the middle matches the one-piece above. And it's sparkly!

Box full of accessories:

Looks a little disorganized now, but it'll all be displayed nicely when you see it in the store (or on our web site). Here we've got belts, chokers, and bracelets.

Not pictured: some skirts, some tops, and some more accessories including earrings (several styles) and pin badges. Look for these in store or on our web site in the coming days! We'll post all of these for sale as quickly as we can.

We also received a few new things from Victorian maiden today! We had a couple of outstanding special orders that we'd been waiting for, and we just added a few things for our store. This is their new and beautiful Shiny Rose dress, in black. Behind it is the Lace Ribbon Stand Collar Blouse in peach - a nice coordinated set.

This dress has a beautiful and understated rose pattern that's black on black - the photo above is brightened a bit so you can more easily see it. We'll take better photos for our web site later.

Also new in stock but not pictured, the black Frill Cotton Underskirt to match with our Noble Check Skirt (this skirt actually requires an underskirt to make the set), new velour gloves (for winter!) and long lace gloves, and new Corsage and Leaf Comb hair accessories in black, bordeaux and mint.

Stop by and check it all out! It will all make it onto our web site soon too.

New SEX POT stuff!

First things: a bunch of you have asked us when we're getting SEX POT ReVeNGe winter coats. And the answer is, we don't know! Hopefully soon. We've got them on order, and have had them on order for a while - along with mufflers (aka scarves) and fluffy hats. It doesn't get as cold as fast in Japan, so winter items get produced later in the season, and it seems like they're waiting until all of our winter items are in before they ship them. But it'll hopefully just be another couple of weeks.

Now! About today's SPR shipment. Lots of other stuff you've been asking for, plus some cool accessories!

This is our favorite thing:

New AI Custom Necklaces!

And best of all, these are special Tokyo Rebel AI Custom necklaces. They were handmade just for us using items we asked for and painted the way we wanted. (Our name's not on them or anything, but the design is exclusive to our store.) There is no other AI Custom necklace on SPR's web site that looks anything like this right now. $55 in the store; they'll also be added to the web site soon.

Lots of you have been asking for the Evil Tail Frill One-piece, so they're back:

Still $79.

New accessories:

That also includes the black-lettered lock on the left. We now have these in black or red lettering. (Sorry, we sold out of pink today!)

Brand new parkas - you guys seem to love purple, so here's a parka with purple fur:

The back is actually sparkly. Doesn't come through well in photos, but it's quite cool in real life. These are $99.

That's it for now! All of these items will be on our web site soon; they're in our store right now. Hopefully winter gear will be in our next shipment.

NY lolitas and one crazy day

Today a large percentage of the NY area lolita community braved the horrendous weather and got together for a meet, passing through our store on the way. It was officially the most crowded this store has ever been in its short life, and unfortunately, our cash register picked this day to get cranky! Sorry for the handwritten receipts and occasionally scattershot attention, girls! It's all sorted out now, but for a while there, I was handwriting more frantically than I have since junior high school.

Hopefully you guys will come back next week, when we get our Putumayo, Atelier-Pierrot and Victorian maiden shipments in!

Here's a photo of the girls who stuck around to the end:

We hope to see you all again!

Consignment: Sell your vintage clothes through us!

Probably the first question we got when we opened was "when are you hiring?" That was almost immediately followed by "do you do consignment?" And we've heard both questions a bunch since then too.

We know a lot of you apparently have lots of clothes you are dying to get rid of. Well, now you can do it through us. You can read about the process and regulations here.

We are not currently buying used clothes outright, as even most vintage clothing stores in New York don't. But this is the way you can sell your old clothes through us, clear out some closet space and make some cash for some new ones!

Algonquins sale! 10-20% off!

Announcing part 3 of our Halloween Fair! From now through October 31, take 10% off any Algonquins clothing item or handbag, or 20% off any Algonquins accessory! Valid either in-store or online.

Online, use the appropriate discount code at checkout:

ALGONHALLO - clothing and handbags
ALGONACCHALLO - accessories

In store, your discount will be applied at the checkout counter.

If you're buying multiple mixed items either from Algonquins or from Algonquins and other brands, please do not use a discount code. Instead, place your order with no discount code and then email us for a price adjustment. Otherwise, your order may be delayed and may need to be re-entered.

Concurrently with this, we will be finishing up posting our remaining Algonquins autumn arrivals to our web site over the next couple days.

NOTE: New Store Hours

Here's something you need to know if you're planning a trip to see us. Until further notice, we will be closed Sundays and Mondays. Our new store hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12:30-8PM.

Monday has been our slowest day, and we've determined that the time is better spent updating our web site with new products and features, and taking care of various little projects in the store that have been building up and that we haven't had time to deal with. Like building a fitting area. Or shoe shelves. Or creating better signage.

This will probably be fairly short-term. But as we're more of a destination store than a store that relies on walk-in traffic, we're really not giving up much by closing Mondays when most of our customers are at work or school, and we feel like it'll be a net gain for everyone in the end. We'll get a lot more done both online and in the store, and you'll notice it.

We'll announce it here if and when we revert back to a six day schedule.

Note that this does not affect our web site shipping. We will still ship web site orders on Mondays.

Quick Atelier-Pierrot batch order! UPDATE: DONE!

As mentioned earlier, we're working to restock our store quickly, and placing orders with basically all of the brands we carry in a short period of time. The next up is Atelier-Pierrot, one of Japan's largest purveyors of true gothic Lolita clothing.

We will be ordering various things for our store from them to fill out our gothic Lolita rack, but if there's anything specific you'd like us to get for you, this is the best time to submit a special order. We should receive it in a period of just a week or two (we are actually hoping to have this shipment before Halloween). With that in mind, this is a TWO DAY order period. It closes Wednesday night at 8PM ET.

Bear in mind that Atelier-Pierrot no longer produces the popular corset bustle skirts in many of the colors that we have been carrying - if you want one in champagne blue or black stripe, we have the last ones. (Red is also no longer available.) Both are beautiful - one is soft polyester, the other heavy cotton. Once these sell out, these bustle skirts are gone, at least unless Atelier-Pierrot decides to produce them again.

Otherwise, we should be able to get any of the items on Atelier-Pierrot's net shop site that are produced by the company itself. That means any of the items in the categories written in kana on the left navigation bar. We cannot get items from other manufacturers that they carry - at least not from them. (They are also a select shop just like us.)

To help you out, the navigation links written in kana translate as:

One-piece (dress)
Jumper Skirt
Blouse
Jacket/Coat
Skirt
Corset
Collectibles

We take a 30% deposit for special orders, payable either through PayPal for online orders, or in our store. The price is the Japanese price at the current exchange rate plus up to 10% to cover shipping from Japan - it's usually a smaller percentage the higher in price you go. We will give you an exact price before invoicing you, but the maximum markup will not be more than 10%. Download our special order form and either print it out and bring it to our store, or send us all of the information by email.

December '09 KERA is here!

Heads up: the December '09 KERA has arrived and is now on sale in our store. As always, the price is $9.50. This month's covergirl is actress Aya Hirayama, and the theme is winter collections. See some of what we'll have in stock in the coming months!

Coinciding with the release of the new KERA, we're discounting remaining copies of the November issue, which will now be $7.

Magazines are currently only sold in our store, not through our web site.

A quick note: restocking

We just wanted to let you guys know that we are restocking our store as quickly as we can at this point. Our first two weeks have actually been quite successful, and one side effect of that is that we need to restock faster than we had planned. We're in that process now, not just of restocking what we're out of (not all sold-out items are even still available), but of adding new stock as well.

But please bear with us over the next week or two if some of our racks look a bit sparse. We know it, we're addressing it, and more than likely over the next couple months we're actually going to have a shortage of rack space rather than the reverse.

We do still have plenty of great stuff, though - don't get the wrong impression. And the good thing for you guys about this is that it's a great time to submit special orders for certain brands. We've already done SPR, Putumayo and Victorian maiden, with Atelier-Pierrot coming up next. Innocent World and Maxicimam will follow - we are almost out of socks!

This is one of those problems people say is nice to have, though, because it means we're doing well. You guys are literally buying stuff faster than we can keep it in stock. But we're speeding up our ordering process to catch up.

Quick Victorian maiden batch order! Ends this Sunday night!

Sorry for the short notice, but we have an immediate need to place a small but quick order with Victorian maiden. Now is your chance to get in any last-minute special orders! We can't say enough good things about VM clothing and accessories - they are truly among the most elegant of all Lolita brands, and every new item we see on their web site makes us wish we could just buy everything they have.

We plan to finalize our order with them early next week. Our next order with them will probably not be for another month or so. So this is your last chance for a while, and their stuff often sells out from their own stock really fast.

Take a look at their site and then follow the process on our special order form. (Their site is often pretty slow - sometimes it helps to refresh the page a couple times.) If you want to do it all online, you don't need to send the actual form back to us, but just email us all the same information and then we'll invoice you for the deposit via PayPal. Yes, you're eligible for the free sticker set promotion.

You can also do this in our store - but you've only got Saturday to do it!

Tokyo Rebel Halloween Fair!

One of the yearly traditions among Japanese street fashion brands and shops is the "Halloween Fair", typically a month-long celebration of Halloween that involves little freebies, discounts and sometimes other events. Well, we're bringing this tradition over to the west. In fact, we're making ours a four-parter, to be announced in stages right up through Halloween week.

Part 1 you already know about - our Victorian maiden and Atelier-Pierrot giveaway promotion. To refresh your memory, purchase any VM item and receive a free sticker set! Purchase $200 worth of Atelier-Pierrot items and receive a cloth tote bag free! (Atelier-Pierrot bags are all gone!) Yes, we're retroactively making this part of the Halloween Fair. The reason why will become apparent later :)

Part 2 we're announcing today. Through the end of the month (or while supplies last), purchase $50 or more worth of SEX POT ReVeNGe clothing or accessories and receive this special limited edition nylon tote bag absolutely free!

This bag measures approximately 11" x 14" x 5".

Please note that if supplies run out before the end of the month, this promotion will end at that time.

(Yes, those of you who have already placed special orders and are waiting for your merchandise will get a free bag too.)

Part 3 - Algonquins sale! Take 10% off any Algonquins clothing item or handbag, or 20% off any Algonquins accessory. When shopping online, use code ALGONHALLO for clothing items or ALGONACCHALLO for accessories. In store, your discount will be applied at the checkout counter. Read more here.

Part 4 - Visit our store dressed up in any Japan-themed outfit on Halloween Day - be it an Astro Boy costume or your best J-punk outfit - and we will give you an additional 10% off any store purchase! This is on top of any other promotions we're running right now, including the Algonquins sale. The only requirements are the outfit must be Japan-themed, and it must be a full-body outfit - not just a top or a pair of shoes.

Online, you can send photos of yourself dressed up in a J-themed outfit by Monday November 2 to info@tokyorebel.com and we will send you a one-time 10% off coupon code and include you in our Halloween gallery - but there is one additional requirement. How we price - adventures in exchange rates

UPDATED 03/03/2016

Hi there!

One of the most common questions we're asked is how our Japanese clothes are priced in US dollars. The basic formula we use to price our products is simply this:

Japanese price in yen converted to dollars at the current exchange rate + our costs to import. That's it!

One of the difficult things about running a US-based store that sells Japanese merchandise is that we're very much affected by the exchange rate. You are too if you order items over the web from Japan - at some point, your money has to change between dollars (or whatever currency is used in your country) and yen. In our case, we make that change before we put our clothes up for sale, so the exchange rate is already factored in to our prices.

With Japan-based stores or shopping services that price in yen, it may be difficult to determine how much you're really going to pay until you actually have to send payment. PayPal and other payment processors can skim a little extra off the top of the exchange rate, or add actual fees (which you may not see until you check your billing statement at the end of the month).

The exchange rate itself may not be what you think it is either. Most people assume it's around 100, however during our time in business we've seen it fluctuate between a high of 125 and a low of 76. That adds up to a 50% difference in our costs, which gets factored into our prices.

You can always see the current exchange rate on our homepage, however be aware that this is provided for informational purposes only. Our products may be priced differently depending on when we received them, since the exchange rate does change over time.

We try to keep our prices as low as possible - the lower our prices, the more we sell. However, we must also recover the import costs we do have or there's no point for us to be in business. Importing clothes from Japan involves shipping costs, fees of various kinds, import duties, and other costs. We do what we can to minimize these costs so we do not have to pass them along to you, but we do have to add a small markup to our clothes to recover the costs we do have.  That averages about $10 per item, but it can be more or less depending on various factors (especially the size and weight of the item, with smaller, lighter items having lower costs to import).

We're still confident that our prices are lower - in some cases much lower - than what you would pay with a Japan-based store or shopping service. Shipping a single item from Japan to the United States can cost upwards of 3,000 yen, or around $30 - far higher than the $10 or so that we add to the dollar price of each item.

A note on shipping charges
Our shipping charges include all costs associated with shipping your package, not just postage. You do not need to worry about how much each individual itemized charge is (for things like insurance, the box, labels, packaging, etc.) - we just wrap everything into one basic shipping charge. If your total shipping charge does cost us less than our web site estimates, we will manually reduce your charge when we ship your order. However, usually we actually lose a little bit of money on shipping - it's very difficult to get the shipping charge exactly right including all associated costs, so we try to err on the side of the customer.

We hope this was informative and not too hard to follow!

Innocent World first shipment!

Tried to tweet about this earlier, but pics didn't seem to be uploading - so here they are in this post. We've received our first shipment from classic Lolita brand Innocent World! As expected, a few items sold out literally within minutes. But we still have lots of really great stuff, including the iconic Elda jumper skirt that you've seen featured in ads in the Gothic & Lolita Bible, some great handbags, wallets, one parasol (get it before it's gone!) and lots of socks in assorted colors and styles. A few quick cell phone pics below - real product photos will be appearing on the web site shortly!

Lolita giveaways - Victorian maiden & Atelier Pierrot freebies!

UPDATE: The Atelier-Pierrot bags are gone! Thanks to all who took advantage of this offer!

For our store's one-week anniversary, we've decided to run a couple of promotions for our first two Lolita brands, Atelier-Pierrot and Victorian maiden. Free stuff! While supplies last. Here are the details:

Victorian maiden
Buy any Victorian maiden item in stock in our shop (either online or in-store) and receive this sticker set absolutely free!

There is no dollar amount requirement for the VM sticker giveaway.

Atelier-Pierrot
Spend $200 on any Atelier-Pierrot item or items and receive a free original tote bag! Normally a $30 value if purchased separately. All gone!

Both offers are good online and in person at our New York City location. To redeem the offer online, place your order as you normally would and then send us an email with your order number and "FREE STUFF" in the subject line. We have enough of both items to last through our current stock. Unfortunately, our online shopping cart does not allow for automatic freebies, so we just need to do it manually.

Of course, in store, we will give you your freebies at the time of purchase.

Happy shopping!

SEX POT ReVeNGe, ALGONQUINS and PUTUMAYO - get your special orders ready!

Heads up, guys - we're about to finalize our winter SPR order, get a few jackets and accessories from Algonquins and place our first-ever order with punk Lolita brand Putumayo. We'll be carrying a selection in our store, but as always, if there's something specific that you want, we will order it just for you. And now, you can either do it online or in-store, for shipping outside of the city or pickup at our New York store. (Please note that we generally cannot get sale items.)

Download the special order form, or pick one up and fill it out in-store at our location at 170 Avenue B. If you'd like to order online, you don't need to actually fill out the form, but you do need to email us all the same information it asks for at info@tokyorebel.com. It also will prevent a potential extra round of emails if you can provide us a link to the actual item page for the item you're interested in on a brand web site. If you come to the store, we'll actually look for the item while you're here to make sure we know what you want.

The web sites for the brands in question, so you can browse:

Putumayo
SEX POT ReVeNGe
Algonquins

The sites are in Japanese and are a little hard to navigate, but just try it out - they won't bite!

You can also ask us about items you've seen in KERA, KERA Maniax or the Gothic & Lolita Bible from these brands. Just be aware that KERA often shows items not yet available, or only available in their own shop. But you can still ask!

There is a 30% deposit requirement. If paying online, we'll invoice you by PayPal. In-store, you can pay with cash or credit card.

The deadline for all three brands is SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10.

Happy ordering!

Opening Day!

Today was our opening day and we're pleased to report that it was a big success! Of course, it started off in frantic fashion as launches of any kind always seem to, with both of us literally running around the store trying to get it ready by 12:30PM. I don't really know why, but we were actually a little surprised to see people gathering to wait outside for opening time. A crowd quickly gathered inside shortly after we opened the doors.

For those who couldn't be there, here is our store interior:

It's a small store but as you can see, there's actually still a lot of room to add and decorate. In the back, we have a large area reserved for shoes (it's kind of cut into the wall, so there's not much else we can put there right now). Believe it or not, our store is larger than any similar stores in Japan.

We actually didn't get a chance to take any photos of the exterior. We've still got some work to do on it anyway - we're not all that happy with our awning.

Here is some of the gang that was there at opening:

(If anybody has any objections to the use of this photo, let us know.)

Everybody looked really cute and you were all great customers! We hope you come back soon.

Arsenic and Old Lace has also posted up her own photos from the opening.

A couple little notes on the immediate future for the store:

* Our next door neighbor (who actually used to rent the place himself) gave us a great idea for a changing area, so we'll be getting on that post-haste. We were actually kind of stuck on this for a while, because our store has lots of little nooks and crannies that make it not obvious where to put a changing area without major construction. But now we've got a direction, so hopefully within a month or so we'll have a curtained area for you to change. This is a priority for us.

* We will have the special order forms ready either tomorrow or Tuesday (remember, we're closed Monday only this week). We just need to make a bunch of copies.

* Several of you saw us receive our Victorian maiden shipment today. Some of that was to fill our last group order, but we do have a few new things for the store, including mini-hats, a rose leaf comb hair accessory (we ordered more, but they only had one left), and two new regular skirts. Check them out in the store, or you can wait for us to post them to the web site.

* We'll hopefully have our information whiteboard up in the store tomorrow, but the next shipment we're expecting is from Innocent World. It should hopefully arrive within the next week. Following that, we're planning orders with Putumayo and Maxicimam right now, so if you're fans of theirs, it's a good time to start thinking about whether you want us to order anything for you. We'll keep you all posted on that.

Once again, thanks for a great opening day!

Those of you outside of New York, have no fear - we'll be updating our web site again soon.

Store opening: some important info

So we're about 12 hours away now from our store opening (we try not to use the word "grand"). Here's some random stuff you should know if you're planning a special trip:

1) We will be accepting credit cards, unlike at NYAF. We just weren't set up for it there, but we are at the store.

2) We do not yet have a changing area. This is one of the things that just didn't get done in time for opening. We hope to have one soon.

3) We will open at 12:30PM and not before. And rest assured, we're opening rain or shine.

4) No food or drink is allowed in the store.

5) No smoking is allowed in the store.

6) If you're taking public transportation, the closest subway train is the L. Get off at the 1st Avenue stop, walk south to 11th St., then east to Avenue B. We are between 10th and 11th streets. You can also take the M9 bus, which stops across the street from us.

7) If you're driving and you're concerned about parking, Saturday is usually pretty easy around our area. There aren't many lots or garages but there should be plenty of spots on the streets around our store. Your best bets are usually between 5th and 10th St. between Avenues B and C, but depending on when you come, on Saturdays you'll often find spots on Avenue B itself.

8) You can't please everyone, and we don't attempt to. But please keep in mind that our store is and always will be a work in progress. There are things we want to fix, things we want to add, things we wished we could have done but didn't get to yet. We'll keep working hard from tomorrow on. This isn't the end of building our store, it's the beginning.

And depending on your plans, this one may be most important:

9. This week only, we are closed Monday, October 5th.

Our normal off day will be Sunday each week. But it wouldn't make much sense to open on Saturday and then close on Sunday, so for one week only we're open all weekend and closing Monday. We'll have signs announcing this as well.

10. Our Victorian maiden shipment will arrive most likely tomorrow, if you're waiting for that. But we aren't sure what time - probably somewhat later in the day.

Thanks, and we hope to see you at the store soon!

Store opening: free stuff!

The countdown is at t-minus 2 days, and it's about time we announce our promotions planned for the store opening.

Everybody loves freebies, right?

Ok, promo #1: the first 20 customers on opening day who spend $50 or more will receive a free Tokyo Rebel unisex t-shirt, as pictured below:

That's the back of the shirt. The front is plain black.

This is only for customers in the New York store. Sorry, we'll have other promotions for online customers at a later date! But we're celebrating our physical store opening this Saturday.

Now, these are not those wimpy thin crappy t-shirts with iron-on graphics that some companies give away. These are heavyweight Anvil t-shirts, professionally printed by one of New York's top promo shops. It may cost us a bit more, but we don't see the point in giving away something you'd only get two or three wearings out of.

We have these shirts in sizes ranging from S-XL, wearable by either girls or guys. However, we do not have unlimited quantities of each size, so come early to be sure to get the size you want.

Promo #2: The first five customers that buy anything will receive a free KERA, KERA Maniax or Gothic & Lolita Bible poster! Yep, if we sold gum, you could buy a pack and we'd give you a free poster. There is no dollar amount required to receive your free poster - you simply need to be among the first five customers that buys something. May we suggest perhaps purchasing a KERA, KERA Maniax or Gothic & Lolita Bible? (Yes, we will have them all for sale on opening day.)

Now, we have a very limited supply of these posters, so you can't pick and choose which one you want. We'll do our best in giving you one that's at least closest to your own favorite style, but we can make no guarantees. All of the posters we have are blown-up covers of the magazines/mooks themselves, like the ones we had decorating our booth at NYAF.

But wait, there's more! If you're among the first five paying customers and you spend over $50, you will receive both a free poster and a free t-shirt! On opening day, combining promotions is not just allowed, it's encouraged.

These won't be the last promotions we ever have - we've already got some brand-specific stuff in the works. But we hope this encourages some of you to brave the weather and check us out on opening day.
